Valmiki Ramayana 7.84.10 meaning

lobhash chapi na kartavyah svalpopi dhanakankshaya kim dhanen-ashramasthanam phalamoolopabhoginam

Do not be greedy, not even a little, out of desire for money. What use is wealth to those who live in a hermitage on fruits and roots?

What it means
Valmiki sends Lava and Kusha to sing the Ramayana and warns them not to accept payment. Some gifts lose their value if done for money. Knowing what you truly need frees you from greed.

Spoken by Valmiki.
