Valmiki Ramayana 6.14.5 meaning

prashamash cha kshama ch-aiva arjavam priyavadita asamarthyam phalanty-ete nirguneshu satam gunah
प्रशमश्च क्षमा चैव आर्जवं प्रियवादिता। असामर्थ्यं फलन्त्येते निर्गुणेषु सतां गुणाः॥

Calmness, patience, honesty and gentle speech, the good qualities of the noble, are mistaken for weakness when shown to those who lack virtue.

What it means
After praying to the ocean for three days without reply, Rama realises softness is not always understood. Kindness is a strength, but sometimes you must also show firmness so it is not taken for granted.
