Valmiki Ramayana 6.12.15 meaning

arto va yadi va driptah paresham sharanam gatah arih pranan parityajya rakshitavyah kritatmana

Whether he comes in distress or even in pride, an enemy who seeks shelter must be protected by a noble person, even at the cost of one's own life.

What it means
Protecting those who turn to you is a sacred duty, regardless of their past or their mood. Our word to shelter someone means nothing if it depends on whether we like them.

Spoken by Rama.
