Valmiki Ramayana 6.12.14 meaning

baddhanjaliputam deenam yachantam sharanagatam na hanyad anrishansyartham api shatrum parantapa

Out of compassion, one should never strike down even an enemy who comes with folded hands, humble and begging for shelter.

What it means
Rama quotes the ancient sage Kandu. Compassion is tested most with people who have wronged us. When someone sincerely asks for mercy, the strong choose kindness over revenge.

Spoken by Rama.
