Valmiki Ramayana 4.29.38 meaning

arthinam upapannanam poorvam chapy-upakarinam asham sanshrutya yo hanti sa loke purushadhamah

A person who promises hope to those who ask for help, especially those who helped him first, and then breaks that promise, is the lowest of people.

What it means
Rama is hurt when Sugriva forgets his promise. Raising someone's hopes and then abandoning them, especially someone who helped you, cuts deep. Keep promises most of all to those who have stood by you.

Spoken by Rama.
