naikasya tu krite lokan vinashayitum arhasi
yuktadanda hi mridavah prashanta vasudhadhipah
You should not destroy whole worlds for the wrong of one person. Rulers who are gentle, calm and punish only as deserved are the best.
What it means
When hurt, we're tempted to punish everyone around the person who hurt us. Lakshmana asks Rama to aim correctly. Fair, proportionate responses show strength; blanket anger shows loss of control.
Spoken by Lakshmana.
