anaryas tv-aryasankashah shauchad dheenas tatha shuchih lakshanyavad alakshanyo duhsheelah sheelavan iva

Without the test of conduct, a mean person can pass for noble, an impure one for pure, someone unworthy for worthy, and the ill-natured for good-natured.

What it means
Appearances are easy to fake for a while. Rama's warning is that only conduct over time reveals what is real. Don't be fooled by polish, and don't rely on polish to hide your own flaws.

Spoken by Rama.
