What use are the Vedas, smritis, reading of puranas, vast scriptures, and confusing rituals whose reward is a cottage in some heavenly village? Apart from the one thing that burns away the heavy load of worldly sorrow and opens the door to the bliss of the Self, the rest is just trading.

What it means
Study and ritual are valuable only if they lead to inner freedom and peace. If they become a transaction, doing this to get that, they miss the point. Ask whether your practice is changing you from within.

Spoken by Bhartrihari.
