I put up with things, but not out of patience. I gave up home comforts, but not out of contentment. I bore cold, wind and heat, but not as discipline. Day and night I meditated on money, not on Shiva. We did what sages do, yet missed every fruit they gain.

What it means
Two people can suffer the same hardship, and one grows while the other just suffers. What changes everything is the reason behind it. Hardship chosen for something higher shapes you; hardship for greed only wears you out.

Spoken by Bhartrihari.
