For a proud man who is hungry, it is better to carry a cloth-covered bowl and go door to door in a holy village or a great forest, where homes are grey with the smoke of sacred fires, just to fill his belly, than to stand pitifully every day before equals of his own clan.

What it means
Asking strangers for help can feel easier than depending on peers who keep score. Bhartrihari values dignity above comfort. Choose sources of support that do not cost you your self-respect every single day.

Spoken by Bhartrihari.
