Wise people, whose minds are made clear by knowing the truth, do something truly hard: they give up wealth they could enjoy, without any longing. We cannot even give up things we never had, do not have, and may never get, things we own only in our wishes.

What it means
Often we suffer over things that exist only in our imagination: the job, the house, the life we think we should have. Letting go of these daydreams can be harder than giving up real things, and more freeing.

Spoken by Bhartrihari.
