The Creator made air the effortless, harmless food of snakes. Animals are happy eating grass and sleeping on open ground. For humans whose minds can cross the ocean of worldly life, he made a livelihood too, but in hunting for it, all their good qualities steadily wear away.

What it means
Making a living can slowly consume the very qualities that make us human: kindness, honesty, curiosity. Earn what you need, but guard your character so that the chase does not wear it down.

Spoken by Bhartrihari.
