Subhashitas Subhashita 459 meaning

asty uttarasyam dishi devatatma himalayo nama nagadhirajah poorvaparau toyanidhee vagahya sthitah prithivya iva manadandah

In the north stands the king of mountains, the Himalaya, whose soul is divine. Stretching from the eastern ocean to the western, he stands like a measuring rod laid across the earth.

What it means
Kalidasa opens his epic by seeing the Himalaya not as rock but as a living, sacred presence. Standing before mountains, rivers or the sea, let yourself feel small and grateful; awe is good for the soul.

Spoken by Kālidāsa.
