Even when starved, weak with age, nearly lifeless, in a miserable state, his glow faded and life slipping away, would the lion, chief among the proud, whose only desire is to tear into the head of a great elephant, ever eat dry grass?

What it means
Hard times test your self-respect. Even when you are struggling, don't trade your values for easy comfort. Keep your standards; your dignity is the one thing that carries you through.

Spoken by Bhartrihari.
