Mahabharata 5.36.45 meaning

Pleasure and pain, rise and fall, gain and loss, death and life — all these touch everyone in turn. So the steady person neither gloats nor grieves.

What it means
Nobody escapes the ups and downs. Since they come to everyone in turn, there's no point being swept away by either. Steady yourself in the middle and ride the waves.

Spoken by Vidura.
