Mahabharata 12.317.9 meaning

mritam va yadi va nashtam yoteetam anushochati duhkhena labhate duhkham dvav anarthau prapadyate

Whoever keeps grieving over what is past, whether dead or lost, only gets sorrow on top of sorrow and suffers two misfortunes instead of one.

What it means
Loss is the first wound; endless replaying is the second, self-inflicted one. Grieving is natural, but dwelling forever doubles the pain. Allow sorrow, then gently turn toward what you can still do.

Spoken by Narada.
