Mahabharata 12.316.13 meaning
satyasya vachanam shreyah satyad api hitam bhavet
yad bhootahitam atyantam etat satyam matam mama
सत्यस्य वचनं श्रेयः सत्यादपि हितं भवेत्।
यद्भूतहितमत्यन्तमेतत्सत्यं मतं मम॥
Speaking the truth is good, but better than truth is what brings real good. What is deeply beneficial to all beings, that I consider truth.
What it means
Honesty is not a weapon for hurting people. The truest truth is the one spoken for everyone's welfare. Before saying something 'just because it is true', ask whether it actually helps.हिंदी में अर्थ
सत्य बोलना श्रेष्ठ है, पर सत्य से भी बढ़कर वह है जो हितकारी हो। जो सभी प्राणियों के लिए अत्यंत हितकारी है, वही मेरे मत में सत्य है।
सच किसी को चोट पहुँचाने का हथियार नहीं। सबसे सच्चा सच वह है जो सबके भले के लिए बोला जाए। 'सच है' कहकर कुछ बोलने से पहले सोचो, क्या इससे किसी का भला होगा?
