Mahabharata 12.288.9 meaning

vaksayaka vadanan nishpatanti yair ahatah shochati ratry-ahani parasya n-amarmasu te patanti tan pandito n-avasrijet pareshu

Arrows of words fly out of the mouth, and the one they hit grieves day and night. Since they strike the most tender spots of another, a wise person never shoots them at others.

What it means
A sharp comment takes a second to say and can hurt someone for years. Words, once fired, cannot be recalled. Think of every harsh remark as an arrow and choose not to release it.

Spoken by Hamsa (the Swan).
