Mahabharata 12.288.8 meaning

Do not wound others, do not speak cruelly, and do not take from someone who is lower than you. Never use harsh, hurtful words that make another person tremble; such words lead to dark places.

What it means
Words can wound deeper than weapons, especially when aimed at someone weaker. Before speaking in anger, ask whether this will leave someone shaken. If so, find another way to say it, or stay silent.

Spoken by Hamsa (the Swan).
