Mahabharata 1.1.208 meaning

chatvara ekato veda bharatam ch-aikam ekatah samagataih surarshibhis tulam aropitam pura mahattve cha gurutve cha dhriyamanam tatodhikam

Long ago the gods and sages put the four Vedas on one side of a scale and the Bharata on the other. In greatness and in weight, the Bharata proved heavier.

What it means
This is a playful way of saying that stories can teach as deeply as scripture. The Mahabharata holds real human dilemmas, and that is why it carries so much weight.
