आत्मा नदी संयमपुण्यतीर्था सत्योदका शीलतटा दयोर्मिः।
तत्राभिषेकं कुरु पाण्डुपुत्र न वारिणा शुध्यति चान्तरात्मा॥
The self is a river: self-control is its holy bathing place, truth its water, good conduct its banks and compassion its waves. Bathe there, son of Pandu — the inner self is not made pure by water.

आत्मा एक नदी है — संयम उसका पवित्र घाट, सत्य उसका जल, सदाचार उसके किनारे और दया उसकी लहरें हैं। हे पाण्डुपुत्र, उसी में स्नान करो; केवल पानी से अंतरात्मा शुद्ध नहीं होती।
रीति-रिवाज़ों का अपना महत्व है, पर मन की सफाई जीने के ढंग से होती है। संयम, सच्चाई, अच्छा आचरण और दया मन को ऐसे धोते हैं जैसे कोई बाहरी काम नहीं।
