Rath Yatra, on the second day of the bright half of Ashadha, is the chariot festival of Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra in Puri. The deities come out of the temple to meet everyone, and pulling the chariot rope is seen as a blessing open to all.
Subhadra's wish to see the city
In Puri, the ocean town of Odisha, Lord Jagannath, a loving form of Krishna, lives in the great temple with his elder brother Balabhadra and his little sister Subhadra. Once Subhadra said she longed to see the town and visit their aunt's house, the Gundicha temple, a few kilometres away. Her brothers happily agreed. Three huge wooden chariots were built, one for each of them, and the siblings set out together, with the whole town pulling the ropes, singing and dancing in the streets. They stayed at their aunt's house for about a week before returning home in the Bahuda Yatra. That journey is repeated every year. Another old story tells how King Indradyumna asked the divine craftsman Vishwakarma to carve the deities. The craftsman agreed on one condition: no one should open the door until he finished. When the queen, worried by the silence, opened it early, the craftsman vanished, leaving the deities with round eyes and no hands. The king was dismayed, but a heavenly voice said the Lord wished to be worshipped in exactly this form. Jagannath's wide eyes, it is said, look upon every devotee equally, rich or poor, near or far.
