Nag Panchami, on the fifth day of the bright half of Shravan, honours the Naag devtas, the serpent deities linked with Shiva, Vishnu and the earth. It reflects respect for all creatures and for nature in the monsoon season; in Gujarat it is kept on the Krishna paksha Panchami instead.
The bride who found a brother
In a village there lived a young bride whose parents had passed away and who had no brother to visit her during Shravan, when brothers traditionally come to take their sisters home. One day, when the women of the house went to dig clay, a snake appeared. One of them raised a stick to strike it, but the young bride stopped her and said gently, 'Do not hurt him; he is my brother.' The snake slid away peacefully. A few days later, a handsome young man came to the house, saying he was her cousin and had come to take her home for the festival. The family happily sent her. On the way he revealed that he was that very snake, the Naag she had protected, and that he truly thought of her as his sister. He took her to his serpent kingdom, where his family welcomed her with love, and sent her back with gifts and blessings. From then on, the bride worshipped the Naag devta on the Panchami of Shravan, and other women did too. The story is about kindness to every creature, and about how love can make family out of strangers.
