Ganesh Chaturthi, on the fourth day of the bright half of Bhadrapada, celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the god of new beginnings. It is celebrated on the grandest scale in Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Andhra and Telangana, with the idol kept at home for 1.5, 3, 5, 7 or 10 days before visarjan.
Parvati's little guardian
One day, Maa Parvati was getting ready for her bath on Mount Kailash and wished there was someone to guard the door. She took the turmeric paste she was using and lovingly shaped it into a little boy, then breathed life into him. She called him her son and told him to let no one in. Soon Lord Shiva returned home and tried to enter. The boy, not knowing who he was, bravely blocked the way. Shiva's attendants tried to move him, but the child stood firm. In the struggle that followed, Shiva, not realising the boy was Parvati's son, struck off his head. When Parvati came out and saw what had happened, her grief and anger shook the whole universe. Shiva, full of regret, sent his ganas to bring back the head of the first living being they found facing north. They returned with the head of a gentle elephant. Shiva placed it on the boy and brought him back to life, and named him Ganapati, the leader of all his ganas. The gods blessed him so that he would be worshipped first before any other deity or any new task. That is why every puja and every new beginning starts with 'Shri Ganeshaya Namah'.
