Chhath Puja is a four-day festival of worship of Surya, the sun, and Chhathi Maiya, celebrated mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and the Nepal Terai, and now by their communities worldwide. Its main day is Kartik Shukla Shashthi, six days after Diwali, when devotees stand in water to offer arghya to the setting sun, then to the rising sun the next morning.
Sita's Chhath and the mother of children
Chhath is one of the oldest festivals of the sun, and many stories surround it. In one, when Lord Ram and Sita returned to Ayodhya after the exile, Sita kept a fast in the month of Kartik and worshipped the sun god on the sixth day, standing in the river at sunset and again at sunrise, praying for the wellbeing of the kingdom. In the Mahabharata, Karna, the son of Surya, stood waist-deep in water every day offering prayers to his father, and Draupadi too is said to have prayed to the sun in hard times, and found strength. Chhathi Maiya, often seen as the sister of Surya and a protector of children, is lovingly called mother by her devotees. People pray to her for the health and happiness of their families. What makes Chhath special is its simplicity and purity. There are no idols and no priests needed; only the sun, the water, home-made thekua and fruits in bamboo baskets, and the devotee's discipline. The family prepares everything by hand with great care, and the whole community gathers on the riverbank singing old folk songs. Chhath reminds us to thank the sun, the source of life, at both its setting and its rising.
