A bird tied by a string flies in every direction and, finding no resting place elsewhere, comes back to the place it is tied. In the same way, my dear, the mind flies here and there and, finding no rest elsewhere, settles back on the breath.
What it means
A restless mind is like that tethered bird. You don't need to fight it; let it tire itself out, then gently return to your breath. That is where it naturally finds rest.
Spoken by Uddalaka.
