Chandogya Upanishad · Satyakama Jabala

Chandogya Upanishad 4.4.2 meaning

jabala tu nam-aham asmi satyakamo nama tvam asi sa satyakama eva jabalo bruveetha iti

When young Satyakama asks his family lineage, his mother Jabala says she does not know it. "My name is Jabala, and your name is Satyakama. So just call yourself Satyakama, son of Jabala."

What it means
A single mother tells her son the plain truth, with no grand family name to offer. Her honesty becomes his identity. Who you are matters far more than which family you were born into.

Spoken by Jabala.
