Chandogya Upanishad · Satyakama Jabala
Chandogya Upanishad 4.4.5 meaning
na-itad abrahmano vivaktum arhati
samidham somy-ahar-opa tva neshye na satyad aga iti
Hearing Satyakama repeat his mother's words honestly, the teacher Gautama says: "Only a true seeker could speak so frankly. Fetch the firewood, my boy — I will take you as my student. You have not strayed from the truth."
What it means
The teacher accepts the boy not for his birth but for his honesty. Telling an uncomfortable truth about yourself takes courage, and that courage is exactly what earns real respect.
Spoken by Gautama.
