Chanakya Niti 1.11 meaning
janeeyat preshane bhrityan bandhavan vyasanagame
mitram ch-apattikaleshu bharyam cha vibhavakshaye
जानीयात्प्रेषणे भृत्यान्बान्धवान् व्यसनागमे ।
मित्रं चापत्तिकालेषु भार्यां च विभवक्षये ॥
You learn a servant's worth when you give them a task, relatives' worth in times of trouble, a friend's worth in a crisis, and a wife's worth when wealth is lost.

काम सौंपने पर सेवक की, संकट आने पर रिश्तेदारों की, विपत्ति में मित्र की और धन चले जाने पर पत्नी की परख होती है।
लोगों का असली स्वभाव मुश्किल में दिखता है। अच्छे दिनों में सब साथ लगते हैं, पर संकट और नुकसान में पता चलता है कि कौन भरोसे लायक है।
