Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.4.2 meaning

na drishter drashtaram pashyer na shruteh shrotaram shrinuyah na mater mantaram manveetha na vijnater vijnataram vijaneeyah

You cannot see the seer of seeing. You cannot hear the hearer of hearing. You cannot think the thinker of thinking. You cannot know the knower of knowing.

What it means
Asked to show the Self directly, Yajnavalkya points to the one doing the looking. You will never catch it as an object, because it is the very subject. Rest as the one who sees.

Spoken by Yajnavalkya.
