Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 2.4.5 meaning

na va are sarvasya kamaya sarvam priyam bhavati atmanas tu kamaya sarvam priyam bhavati

It is not for the sake of things themselves, my dear, that anything is loved. It is for the sake of the Self that everything becomes dear.

What it means
Before this line Yajnavalkya lists spouse, children and wealth. Everything we love reflects back a joy that comes from within. Knowing this, love becomes less grasping and more grateful.

Spoken by Yajnavalkya.
