Srimad Bhagavatam 8.20.10 meaning

manasvinah karunikasya shobhanam yad arthikamopanayena durgatih kutah punar brahmavidam bhavadrisham tato vator asya dadami vanchitam

मनस्विनः कारुणिकस्य शोभनं यदर्थिकामोपनयेन दुर्गतिः। कुतः पुनर्ब्रह्मविदां भवादृशां ततो वटोरस्य ददामि वाञ्छितम्॥

For a noble, compassionate person, even falling into hardship by fulfilling a seeker's wish is a glory. How much more so when the seeker is a knower of truth like you! So I will give this young student what he asks.

What it means

Bali knows giving will cost him everything and gives anyway, because he promised. Integrity sometimes means accepting loss to stay true to your word. Keep the promises you make.

एक उदार, दयालु व्यक्ति के लिए माँगने वाले की इच्छा पूरी करने में कष्ट उठाना भी शोभा है। और जब माँगने वाला आप जैसा ब्रह्मज्ञानी हो, तब तो और भी! इसलिए मैं इस बालक ब्रह्मचारी को उसकी माँगी चीज़ दूँगा।

बलि जानते हैं कि देने से सब कुछ चला जाएगा, फिर भी देते हैं, क्योंकि वचन दिया था। ईमानदारी का अर्थ कभी-कभी अपने वचन पर टिके रहने के लिए नुकसान स्वीकारना है।
