Srimad Bhagavatam 1.2.9 meaning
dharmasya hy-apavargyasya narthorthayopakalpate
narthasya dharmaikantasya kamo labhaya hi smritah
The real purpose of dharma is freedom, not earning wealth. And for someone devoted to dharma, wealth is not meant for chasing pleasures.
What it means
This verse puts money in its place. Goodness is not a tool for getting rich, and riches are not a licence for endless indulgence. Each has a higher purpose than the one we usually give it.
