Valmiki Ramayana 6.12.17 meaning
vinashtah pashyatas tasya rakshinah sharanagatah
adaya sukritam tasya sarvam gachched arakshitah
विनष्टः पश्यतस्तस्य रक्षिणः शरणागतः।
आदाय सुकृतं तस्य सर्वं गच्छेदरक्षितः॥
If someone who came for shelter is destroyed while the protector just watches, that person takes away all the protector's good merit.

अगर रक्षक के देखते-देखते शरणागत नष्ट हो जाए, तो वह असुरक्षित व्यक्ति रक्षक का सारा पुण्य लेकर चला जाता है।
जो हम पर निर्भर था, उसे निराश करना जितना लगता है उससे ज़्यादा भारी पड़ता है; यह हमारी भलाई की पूँजी ख़ाली कर देता है। कमज़ोर की ज़िम्मेदारी लेकर छोड़ी नहीं जाती।
