Valmiki Ramayana 2.18.34 meaning

sanshrutya cha pitur vakyam matur va brahmanasya va na kartavyam vritha veera dharmam ashritya tishthata

Once you have agreed to what your father, mother or a teacher asks, brave one, a person who stands firm in dharma must never let that word go to waste.

What it means
Rama tells Lakshmana why he will keep his father's word and go to the forest. A promise to the people who raised and taught us carries special weight. Saying yes and then backing out quietly breaks trust.

Spoken by Rama.
