Valmiki Ramayana 1.1.29 meaning

mrite tu tasmin bharato vasishthapramukhair dvijaih niyujyamano rajyaya n-aichchad rajyam mahabalah sa jagama vanam veero ramapadaprasadakah

After the king died, Bharata was urged by Vasishtha and other sages to become king, but he refused the throne. Instead the brave prince went to the forest to beg Rama's forgiveness.

What it means
Bharata was handed a kingdom and walked away from it because it was not rightfully his. Refusing what you could easily take, simply because it is wrong, is a rare and powerful kind of strength.

Spoken by Narada.
