Subhashitas Subhashita 63 meaning

apriyavachan-angarair dagdhopi na vipriyam vadaty-aryah kim dahyamanam agaru svabhavasurabhim parityajati

Even when burned by the hot coals of unkind words, a noble person does not answer unkindly. Does fragrant agarwood give up its natural scent even while it is burning?

What it means
When someone insults you, you get to choose whether they also change who you are. Like incense that smells sweeter as it burns, stay gracious under pressure. Your response reveals your nature.
