Spirited people, devoted to the vow of truth, would happily give up even their lives, but never their promise, which they follow like a pure-hearted mother, the source of modesty and countless virtues.

What it means
Your word is one of the most valuable things you own. Keeping promises, even when it costs you, builds trust and self-respect. Be careful what you promise, then honour it.
