Mahabharata 5.34.71 meaning

akroshaparivadabhyam vihinsanty-abudha budhan vakta papam upadatte kshamamano vimuchyate

The foolish try to wound the wise with abuse and slander. But the one who speaks such words takes on the wrong, while the one who forgives is set free.

What it means
When someone insults you, the ugliness stays with them. You only carry it if you hold on. Forgiving is not losing — it is choosing not to pick up their burden.

Spoken by Vidura.
