Mahabharata 12.288.16 meaning

akrushyamano nakroshen manyur eva titikshatah akroshtaram nirdahati sukritam chasya vindati

When abused, do not abuse in return. The anger of the one who patiently bears it burns up the abuser, and the patient one gains the abuser's good merit.

What it means
Hurling insults back only doubles the damage. Holding your ground silently lets the insult fall back on the one who threw it. Over time, your restraint becomes your strength and their rage their burden.

Spoken by Hamsa (the Swan).
