Mahabharata 1.82.11 meaning

vaksayaka vadanan nishpatanti yair ahatah shochati ratryahani parasya va marmasu ye patanti tan pandito n-avasrijet pareshu

Arrows of words fly from the mouth; struck by them, a person grieves day and night. They pierce another's tender spots, so the wise never shoot them at others.

What it means
A cutting remark can replay in someone's mind for years. Once spoken, words cannot be pulled back. Being careful with what you say is one of the kindest things you can do.

Spoken by Yayati.
