Katha Upanishad 2.1.1 meaning

paranchi khani vyatrinat svayambhoos tasmat paran pashyati n-antaratman kashchid dheerah pratyagatmanam aikshad avrittachakshur amritatvam ichchan

The Creator made the senses open outward, so people look outward and not within. But a rare wise person, longing for the deathless, turns their gaze inward and sees the Self.

What it means
Our eyes and ears naturally point outward, so we chase what is out there. Turning attention inward goes against habit, but that is where the deepest discoveries are made.

Spoken by Yama.
