Katha Upanishad 1.2.18 meaning

na jayate mriyate va vipashchin n-ayam kutashchin na babhoova kashchit ajo nityah shashvatoyam purano na hanyate hanyamane shareere

The knowing Self is never born and never dies. It did not come from anywhere, nor did it become anything. Unborn, eternal, everlasting and ancient, it is not killed when the body is killed.

What it means
This is Death's direct answer to Nachiketa: the real you is beyond birth and death. Whatever loss you face, something essential in you and in those you love remains untouched.

Spoken by Yama.
