Hitopadesha 2.18 meaning

arakshitam tishthati daivarakshitam surakshitam daivahatam vinashyati jeevaty-anathopi vane visarjitah kritaprayatnopi grihe na jeevati

What fate protects survives even unguarded; what fate strikes perishes even when well guarded. An orphan left alone in the forest may live, while one cared for with every effort at home may not.

What it means
We cannot control everything, no matter how careful we are. This is humbling but also freeing: do your best, then trust life a little, and do not blame yourself for what no one could prevent.
