In North India it falls on Jyeshtha Amavasya; in Maharashtra, Gujarat and much of the South it is kept as Vat Purnima on Jyeshtha Purnima.
The story of Savitri and Satyavan
Savitri was the wise and lovely daughter of King Ashwapati. When it was time to marry, she chose Satyavan, a kind young man who lived in the forest caring for his blind father, a king who had lost his kingdom. Sage Narad warned her that Satyavan would live only one more year, but Savitri held to her choice. She married him and lived happily in the forest, quietly fasting as the fateful day came near. On that day she went with Satyavan to cut wood. He felt faint, lay his head in her lap beneath a banyan tree, and passed away. Then Yamaraj, the lord of death, came to take his soul. Savitri followed him. Yamaraj told her to turn back, but she kept walking, speaking such wise and gentle words about dharma that he was pleased and offered her boons, anything but Satyavan's life. She asked for her father-in-law's sight and kingdom, then for her father to have sons, and finally to be the mother of Satyavan's children. Yamaraj granted it, then smiled, realising that the last wish could only come true if Satyavan lived. He returned his life. Under the banyan tree, Satyavan awoke.
