Sharad Purnima, the full moon of Ashwin, is said to be the night when the moon shines with all sixteen kalas and Krishna performed the Maha Raas with the gopis. In Bengal, Odisha and Assam it is Kojagari Lakshmi Puja; across the North, families leave kheer under the moonlight and share it as prasad.
Who is awake tonight?
On the brightest full moon of autumn, it is said that Maa Lakshmi comes down to earth and walks from home to home in the moonlight, softly asking, 'Ko jagarti? Who is awake?' She blesses the homes where people are awake, the lamps are lit, and hearts are calm and full of devotion. There is an old tale of a poor Brahmin and his wife who had very little. On this night, instead of sleeping, they cleaned their small home, lit a lamp, offered what little rice and milk they had, and stayed awake singing Lakshmi's name. In the moonlight, the goddess passed their door, saw the lamp and the love with which it was lit, and blessed them, and their life slowly became comfortable and content. On the same night in Vrindavan, Krishna played his flute on the banks of the Yamuna, and the gopis left everything to dance the Maha Raas with him, each feeling Krishna was dancing with her alone. The moon, they say, was so delighted that it stood still. That is why families keep kheer under the open moon tonight, believing it soaks up the moon's gentle coolness, and share it the next morning. It is a night for gratitude, wakefulness and joy.
