Sharad Navratri, starting on the first day of the bright half of Ashwin, is the main autumn Navratri: nine nights of worship of Maa Durga's nine forms, ending in Dussehra. In Bengal and the East it becomes Durga Puja from Shashthi, in Gujarat the nights are full of garba, and in the South many homes set up a Golu of dolls.
Ram's autumn worship of the goddess
Long ago, Durga was worshipped in spring. But when Lord Ram was about to fight Ravana in Lanka to rescue Sita, he knew he needed the blessing of the Mother. So, in the autumn, out of the usual season, he called on the goddess with deep devotion. This is why it is called Akal Bodhan, the untimely awakening. Ram vowed to offer her 108 blue lotuses. As he worshipped her through the nights, the goddess quietly tested him and hid one lotus. When Ram reached the last flower and found it missing, he did not give up or look for an excuse. He remembered that people called him Rajiv Lochan, the lotus-eyed one, and he raised an arrow to offer one of his own eyes in place of the lotus. At that moment, Maa Durga appeared, stopped his hand and blessed him with victory. Soon after, Ram defeated Ravana. That is why, in autumn, homes across India and around the world invite the goddess for nine nights, light a lamp, sow barley and pray. The story reminds us that the goddess values a full and honest heart more than any offering.
