Raksha Bandhan 2027 in Kathmandu

Raksha Bandhan, on the full moon of Shravan, celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. A sister ties a rakhi on her brother's wrist and prays for him, and he promises to stand by her; today many celebrate it between any siblings or cousins.

Draupadi's strip of silk

Puja, step by step

1. Bathe in the morning; many families first offer a rakhi to their ishta devata, Krishna or Ganesha.
2. Prepare the thali with rakhi, roli, akshat, diya and sweets.
3. Have the brother sit facing east, with a handkerchief or cloth on his head if that is your custom.
4. The sister applies a roli tilak and a few grains of akshat on his forehead.
5. She does a small aarti with the diya and ties the rakhi on his right wrist.
6. She feeds him a sweet and prays for his wellbeing; he gives her a gift and his blessing or promise of support.
7. Younger siblings touch the feet of elder ones.
8. If you are far apart, post the rakhi early, and tie it on a video call at the auspicious time; the brother can tie it himself or ask someone at home.
