Karva Chauth, on the fourth day of the dark half of Kartik (Purnimanta calendar), is a day-long fast kept by married women for their husbands' long life and wellbeing. It is most widely kept in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, and today many husbands fast too.

When
Katha and puja in the evening (pradosh kaal); break the fast after moonrise once you have seen the moon and offered arghya. Moonrise varies a lot by city, so check your local time.
Fast
A nirjala fast from sunrise to moonrise is traditional, though many now take water or fruit; if you are pregnant, unwell, elderly or diabetic, consult your doctor; a phalahar fast is fine.

The story of Veeravati

There was once a young woman named Veeravati, the only sister of seven loving brothers. After her marriage, she came to her parents' home for her first Karva Chauth and kept the fast from sunrise without food or water. As the evening wore on, she grew weak with hunger and thirst and kept waiting for the moon. Her brothers could not bear to see her suffer. They climbed a tree behind the village, lit a fire and held a sieve in front of it, so that from a distance it glowed like the rising moon. They called her, saying the moon had risen. Trusting them, Veeravati offered water to the 'moon' and broke her fast. Soon afterwards, news came that her husband was very unwell. Heartbroken, she realised the fast had been broken too early. Rather than give up, she went to her husband's side and, with great patience and faith, kept the Chauth fasts of the whole year, serving him and praying. On the next Karva Chauth, her devotion was rewarded and her husband was restored to health. The story is about steadfast love and patience, and about keeping one's promise with a full heart, even when it is hard.

What you need

Puja, step by step

  1. Before sunrise, eat the sargi and drink water, then begin the fast with a sankalp.
  2. Apply mehendi the day before or in the morning, and dress in festive clothes in the afternoon.
  3. In the evening, set up the picture of Karva Mata and Shiva-Parvati, fill the karva with water and place it on the thali.
  4. Gather with other women in person or on a video call, pass the thalis around in a circle as the songs are sung, and listen to the Veeravati katha.
  5. Do a short puja with roli, akshat, flowers and the diya, and give the baya to your mother-in-law or an elder and take her blessings.
  6. After moonrise, step outside or onto the balcony, look at the moon through the chalni, then at your husband through it.
  7. Offer water to the moon from the karva or lota and pray for your husband's wellbeing.
  8. Your husband gives you the first sip of water and a bite of sweet to break the fast.
  9. If clouds or city lights hide the moon, many families break the fast at the panchang's moonrise time facing the direction of the moon, or after seeing it on a live stream from a nearby city.
