Parvati's long tapasya

One day Lord Shiva sat with Parvati on Mount Kailash and gently asked if she remembered how they had come together. Then he told her the story himself. After Sati, Shiva's first wife, gave up her body, she was born again many times, each time hoping to be united with him. In one birth she came as Parvati, daughter of Himalaya, the king of the mountains. From childhood she wished only for Shiva. She went into the forest and did years of deep tapasya, living on leaves, then on air alone, through the heat of summer, the cold of winter and the rains. Her father worried, and the sage Narad tested her resolve, but she would not give up. At last, on the Tritiya of the bright half of Shravan, when the earth was green and fresh after the rains, Shiva appeared before her, moved by her devotion, and accepted her as his wife. Shiva told her that any woman who keeps this vrat with faith will be blessed with a happy home. That is why Hariyali Teej is joyful, full of green bangles, mehendi, swings and songs, celebrating love that is patient, faithful and strong.
